أَحَبَّ يَعْقُوبُ صَوْتَ الْعُودِ، وَحَلُمَ أَنْ يَعْزِفَ أَلْحَانًا جَمِيلَةً.

Yaqoub loved the sound of the oud and dreamed of playing beautiful melodies.

فِي دَرْسِهِ الْأَوَّلِ، لَمْ تُطِعْهُ أَصَابِعُهُ، وَخَرَجَتِ النَّغَمَاتُ مُتَقَطِّعَةً.

In his first lesson, his fingers would not obey him, and the notes came out broken.

تَدَرَّبَ أُسْبُوعَيْنِ، ثُمَّ قَالَ لِأُسْتَاذِهِ: «رُبَّمَا لَسْتُ مَوْهُوبًا.»

He practised for two weeks, then told his teacher, “Perhaps I am not talented.”

أَخَذَهُ الْأُسْتَاذُ إِلَى بُسْتَانِ زَيْتُونٍ، وَأَشَارَ إِلَى شَجَرَةٍ صَغِيرَةٍ.

His teacher took him to an olive grove and pointed to a young tree.

قَالَ: «تَحْتَاجُ شَجَرَةُ الزَّيْتُونِ عَادَةً إِلَى سَنَوَاتٍ مِنَ الْعِنَايَةِ قَبْلَ أَنْ تُثْمِرَ.»

He said, “An olive tree usually needs years of care before it bears fruit.”

ثُمَّ أَضَافَ: «الْمَوْهِبَةُ بَذْرَةٌ، أَمَّا التَّدْرِيبُ الْمُنْتَظِمُ فَهُوَ الْمَاءُ وَالضَّوْءُ.»

Then he added, “Talent is a seed, while regular practice is the water and light.”

وَضَعَ يَعْقُوبُ خُطَّةً قَصِيرَةً: تَمْرِينٌ لِلْأَصَابِعِ، ثُمَّ مِقْطَعٌ مُوسِيقِيٌّ وَاحِدٌ.

Yaqoub made a short plan: a finger exercise followed by one musical passage.

كُلَّمَا أَخْطَأَ، أَعَادَ الْمِقْطَعَ بِبُطْءٍ بَدَلًا مِنْ أَنْ يَغْضَبَ.

Whenever he made a mistake, he repeated the passage slowly instead of becoming angry.

بَعْدَ عَامٍ، عَزَفَ أَمَامَ أُسْرَتِهِ مِنْ دُونِ أَنْ يَتَوَقَّفَ.

After a year, he played for his family without stopping.

وَبَعْدَ ثَلَاثِ سَنَوَاتٍ، شَارَكَ فِي مُسَابَقَةٍ مَحَلِّيَّةٍ لِلشَّبَابِ.

After three years, he entered a local youth competition.

لَمْ يَكُنْ عَزْفُهُ خَالِيًا مِنَ الْأَخْطَاءِ، لَكِنَّهُ عَزَفَ بِثِقَةٍ وَفَازَ بِالْمَرْكَزِ الْأَوَّلِ.

His playing was not free of mistakes, but he performed confidently and won first place.

حَمَلَ الْجَائِزَةَ إِلَى أُسْتَاذِهِ وَقَالَ: «عَلَّمَتْنِي شَجَرَةُ الزَّيْتُونِ أَنْ أَنْتَظِرَ الثَّمَرَ وَأَعْمَلَ مِنْ أَجْلِهِ.»

He took the prize to his teacher and said, “The olive tree taught me to wait for the fruit and work for it.”
