The 99 Names of Allah (أسماء الله الحسنى — Asma ul-Husna) are divine attributes that describe who Allah is — His mercy, power, knowledge, and more. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "Allah has ninety-nine names; whoever enumerates (memorises and understands) them will enter Paradise." (Bukhari & Muslim). Learning the Asma ul-Husna is not just memorisation — it is a journey of knowing Allah more deeply. Each name reveals a facet of His greatness and draws the believer closer to Him in love and awe.
Ar-Rahman (الرحمن — The Most Gracious) and Ar-Rahim (الرحيم — The Most Merciful) open every surah of the Quran. Ar-Rahman is Allah's general mercy for all creation; Ar-Rahim is His special mercy for the believers. Other names of mercy include Al-Ghaffar (The Repeatedly Forgiving) and Al-Wadud (The Loving).
Al-Malik (الملك — The King), Al-Aziz (العزيز — The All-Mighty), Al-Qawi (القوي — The All-Strong), and Al-Qadir (القدير — The All-Powerful) highlight that Allah alone has true and ultimate authority over all of creation and the heavens.
Al-Alim (العليم — The All-Knowing), Al-Khabir (الخبير — The All-Aware), Al-Basir (البصير — The All-Seeing), and As-Sami (السميع — The All-Hearing) remind us that nothing is hidden from Allah — every thought, whisper, and deed is known to Him.
Group names by theme (mercy, power, knowledge) rather than memorising them in sequence — it is easier and more meaningful. Our activity uses themed groups and a matching quiz to help children build recognition gradually. Listening to a nasheed of the names daily is also very effective.
